Got Milk?

If  you are drinking cow’s milk and your baby is acting colicky, the two could be related.   You don’t have to be feeding your baby cow’s milk for it to affect them.  If you are eating many, or even some, milk products this could be affecting your baby.

American Pediatrics and Cow’s Milk

For the best infant nutrition, pick the right milk source and eventually introduce the infant to solid foods.  The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants be fed breast milk or iron-fortified formula during the first 12 months of life.  Between ages 4 – 6 months, certain solid foods may be added.  Breast milk or iron-fortified formula, along with age-appropriate solid foods and juices, during the first year of life provides the most balanced nutrition.

If your baby is having symptoms of colic, then getting rid of the cow’s milk in your and your baby’s diet is a great place to start.

Why does cow’s milk cause problems for my newborn or infant?

Cow’s milk is not bad for us but it is inappropriate for infants or children less than a year old.  Why?

Suggested Dairy Intake for Babies and Toddlers
• None for infants 0-3 months
• None for infants 4-5 months
• None for infants 6-8 months
• Small servings for infants 9-12 months
• 20 – 24 oz. whole milk for toddlers 1-2 years

Storing milk can help prevent colic?

What happens when you can’t nurse the way you wanted to? You have to go to work, you may have developed back problems, or you may just be too sore.   Should you just switch to formula? This is an option but you might be asking yourself, “what about the complications from switching to formula? I’ve heard about problems with soy and cow’s milk and that they can cause colic.”
